Off to Vegas! WPPI, 2007

Welp, tomorrow I leave for Vegas to speak at my second Wedding and Portrait Photographer’s International convention. Last year my presentation was called “Pilot or Passenger” and the second half was called “Capturing the Candid Moment”.

This year, I am speaking twice… two 2-hour presentations, but luckily I am speaking with my good friend Jim Kennedy of Huntington Beach, CA. I’m totally psyched that Jim is speaking with me. The first time I met Jim was in NYC at Becker’s workshop. I talked to him for 5 minutes and immediately my business began to change. He’s really inspiring, too and this year, his studio is scheduled to shoot 300 or so weddings, about 100 of those he shoots himself. Right now he’s shooting a wedding in Cabo and is making an interesting shot back to LA, then driving to Vegas.

Jenny told me that we ought to make sure we don’t dress alike on the days of our presentations. It’s funny how every time we get together, we look like twins, like we called each other to see what each other is wearing.

My portion of the presentation is inspired by Mike Basch, my friend, my brother (Big Brothers Big Sisters), my personal and business mentor. Most know him as one of FedEx’s founding officers, and inventor of the $100 million superhub. His book, Customer Culture is a grand scale philosophy of how huge businesses can create a customer following, leading to loyalty. I’ll be putting my own personal spin on his concept, but on a much smaller scale, how a small business owner, like a wedding photographer, can create a sense of family or a really neat club! The blog will be a major topic for me. I’ll also be doing a recap from last year’s “Pilot or Passenger” theme.

I’m also looking forward to making it to my second [b] party, a party held by Becker Photographer out of Orange County. Jenny and I got invited last year and it was a great time. THERE WILL BE PHOTOS, my peeps! Stay tuned! Hopefully I can even post something from Vegas.
