FitDay Update: week 5 of 12
I don’t have a lot of blogging time today so I thought I’d just post a quick update from my Commando Diet! For all the doubters out there, I have stuck to my routine, not flinching one bit and the results are starting to show in ways I have never experienced before, nor expected!
To summarize: RORY PALAZZO, YOU ARE GOING DOWN!

This is my inspiration, but I’m not going to shave and grease up!
The routine:
M and F: lift days - 45-55 minutes of freeweights. (no I am not one of those annoying tank-top wearing, grunting, making-wierd noises, slow-walking with arms out kind of gym rats. I’m a regular guy and I prefer to go un-noticed at the gym, in case you were wondering!) Now Jenny on the other hand… she makes all sorts of crazy grunt sounds.
T/W/R/Sat: Run days - usually Wash Park. It’s a 2.75 mile loop. I run with Gary. Sometimes he has to poop and that slows down my time. Today we had a good day, I got him to poop BEFORE our jog. (Gary is my dog, in case you were wondering!)
When I can, I like to run an old favorite trail: Mt. Sanitas in Boulder. It’s only 1.5 miles to the summit, but a 1500 vertical gain so it’s very steep. “It’s a good way to hork up your esophogus!”.
Every day: Commute on my bike. To work, to the grocery store, to meet with peeps, day, night, rain, shine. I avg. about 60 minutes a day on my bike and probably 90-120 miles a week.
Diet: Small meals every two hours. Lean meats and whey protiens, whole grains, nothing too processed, fruits or other natural carbs. I strive for 2000 calories a day and 165 grams of protien. No fat, never ever and NO NO NO NO NO cheating. If I eat a cheese nib, I have cheated and therfore I am a huge failure!
I’m not quite THAT hard on myself, but I DO NOT allow any tiny bit of cheating on M-Sat.
Sundays: I can eat whatever I want, sleep in if I want, working out is optional, but I love riding my bike and hate driving my car, so I still always ride.
RESULTS:
I’m in my 5th week. My goal is to get to 185 by Oct. 13 (I have 7 more weeks after this week).
Starting weight: 215
Current weight: 198
Weight lost: 17 lbs.
Remaining weight needed to lose by Oct. 13: 13 lbs.
Today I set a new record at Wash Park: 20.55, so 7.4 minute miles. My first run at Wash Park: 25:34. Mt. Sanitas, current time to beat (to the summit): 34:47
So there’s the “data”. Here’s the results that I really love:
1. I am 3 lbs lost from being able to say for once in my life, “I lost 20 pounds!”
2. I am no longer a dang “Clydesdale”! (over 200 lbs.)
3. Productivity is sky high. I get up at 5:30 AM, workout, go to work and HOLY COW, I am getting things done!!!
4. Other aspects of my life are following suit:
* I am nicer to people and generally more happy!
* I am less stressed and more confident about work and my career.
* I can see noticeable changes in my body and complexion
* I have suddenly become more tidy and organized, in the office (just painted and organized it), my car looks like it’s right off the lot, my finances, my business - I am developing super efficient client and employee systems.
* it’s almost time to go belt shopping. I am running out of knotches!
* My commute to work (on the bike) is powerful and with a steady cadence.
* Things are just happening. I don’t know how to describe it, but for the first time in my life, I feel that my management of fitness, organization, motivation, efficiency, etc… are all coming together and my daily routine is becoming more of a well-oiled machine! I still have screw-ups and set backs, and there will always be room for improvement in my business or financial, or with health and fitness. Even so, I have a solid plan and everything is improving in front of my very eyes!
I have been getting requests from peeps who want to see my “before” photo. Like I said on day 1, I will post my before and after photo on October 13. I do not plan on “flexing” or shaving my chest in the after photo, because I am not a meat-head.
I am starting to get excited. I want to run more races. I am thinking about blocking out a Sat from weddings next August to run the Pike’s Peak Ascent for the first time since 2004! I have a personal record on that mountain that needs to be crushed.
Anway, stay tuned for more or see how I’m doing at: MY FIT DAY

GO MARK! I’m so excited for you! I am trying to get back to my pre-wedding shape, and you are an inspiration. I just want to be buff again and have that confidence… and like Jenny I want peanut arms :). You’re doing great - so glad EVERYTHING is falling into place for you.

Good job Mark! What’s your plan for week 13?
August 21st, 2007 at 11:06 pm
Thanks Jen! And Katherine, week 13 I am probably going to be doing a lot of cycling on MY NEW PINARELLO! Things aren’t going to change much, but given that winter will be right around the corner, I will probably get some snow shoes. I want to enter some snowshoe 10K’s and ski a lot this winter. These 12 weeks are aimed for fast weight loss and toning. Once it’s over, I want to have fun wth my new body and recreate more, get back into trail running, maybe start running with the Incline Club again, maybe register for another Pikes Peak Ascent, maybe even try my hand at bike racing again! So I plan on just being more active. My eating will not change. I love working hard and making sacrifices and then rewarding myself of Sundays.

Actually, Katherine - Last time I did this I had great results (although nothing like this round will concur) and you know what I did? Jenny and I went out to the beach in CA to celebrate. We spent the weekend eating, drinking, and relaxing. When I came back, I kept eating, drinking, and relaxing. The lesson learned: once 12 weeks is up, I can’t take that as “mission accomplished”. This is an ongoing thing. I will continue to stick to the routine. I am going to put my “before” picture in my goalbook so I will never forget how heavy and lethargic I USED to feel.
Dan - I hate you and your stupid cat. Guys have no business owning fluffy, purry, living hairballs. Why don’t you just go out and get yourself some stuffed animals while you are at it. At your wedding I will only be taking photos of Angie. Not the three of you (Angie, Dan, Dan’s double-chin).
