Is it a sin to think about UFC at church?
Disclosure: It’s Sunday, so I am not doing work today! Yay for Sundays off! (I don’t get “weekends” like all of you 9-5ers!)
I talked to my sister Katherine briefly about what I should or shouldn’t post on this blog. It’s a marketing tool, I’m not going to lie, but first, it’s my personal journal. Per Katherine’s counsil, I shouldn’t be ashamed to be myself on my blog. After all, if I have existing or potential clients visiting my blog and they don’t like the posts which I consider bits and pieces of ME online, then well, it’s probably a good way of screening out clients that I might not be compatible with. I would rather have a weekend off, than be paid to spend an intense saturday with a couple that I can’t jive with. This weekend I spent THREE days shooting an Eastern Indian wedding. I was exhausted by the end of it… and very thankful that Deepali and Sapan were so great to be around.
Anyway, that brings me to my confession. Actually before I let the cat out of the bag here, today Jenny and I had a GREAT splurge day! We actually went to church in Boulder! When I lived in Boulder, I used to sneak out of my house (I had like 5 room mates) and I’d go to First Presbyterian Church to see Pastor Peter Barnes do his thing. I was embarrassed and didn’t want my room mates to know I went to church. Dumb, huh? One Christmas Eve I even went to the candlelight service alone there. So today it was really great to bring Jenny. We followed it up with a greasy breakfast and about 4 mimosa’s at THE BUFF.
I’m so picky when it comes to finding a church I like. I hate the kind of church where people put on their perfect faces and put newcomers on the spot by asking questions like, “so do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ?”. That’s a question you just don’t ask people when you first meet them. I also don’t like churches that are too singy. I prefer boring old hymns over hyped up, “put hands in the air and wave ‘em like ya just don’t ca-are” Christian music. I don’t like to sing, therefore that part of church I just prefer to keep short and painless. I love FPC Boulder because Peter Barnes does an amazing job of keeping my attention and his lessons are always so positive and real, encouraging, inspiring… I could go on. The people who go to First Pres Boulder are the kind that you will see an hour later on the trails or later at the Mountain Sun eating a spicy chicken burrito and a beer. Mostly I just leave happy and ready to spend the next week trying my best to be a good person, and not a vexation.
At church, the lesson was about music. How music can really affect people, yada yada yada. During breakfast Jenny and I were talking about the sermon. I’m sure Peter Barnes wasn’t intending on provoking thought about UFC, Ultimate Fighting Championships, but I told Jenny that the music that is played when the fighters walk into the ring is always really intense and intimidating. So that’s my confession, I am a UFC fan.
Funny thing is that later, Jenny asked me what kind of dog I think I’d be… if I were a dog. I thought it would be more fun for us to tell each other what kind of dog we’d be.
I told Jenny that she’d be a Golden Retreiver because she is so sweet and gentle and kind and never barks. I believe that is true.

She told me that I would be a mutt. She says I would be a cross between a lab, because I am fun and goofy, a German Shepard because I walk like one, soft and firm stepped, when I am shooting weddings, and a St. Bernard, because I am a mountan man, and I dreul a lot. Guilty as charged!
So back to UFC, one of my favorite fighters is Andre Arlovski. He goes by “THE PITBULL”, so he must have had the same conversation at one time, too. I like him because he is showy and loves to ham it up for the camera. He has a real bushy mountain-man beard and is super scary. His web site is entertaining, too.

I sure hope he’s not into dog fighting like Michael Vick. It’s sick and horrible. I feel really upset whenever I hear about that kind of stuff. I used to dog sit a pitbull named Champ. He was a snuggler and a real nice dog. I hate that they are abused.
My other favorite fighter is Matt Hamill. What I like about him is that he’s super focused despite his disability (he’s deaf) and a former world ranked wrestler. He’s a good guy, a pure athlete and demonstrates genuine showmanship.
So there’s my confession. I’m no longer a closet UFC fan. The fighters are block-heads and tough as nails, which makes for an entertaining event, but I suppose that maybe since I wrestled in high school, I appreciate the competitive nature of the sport. It’s not just a bunch of brutes from the streets killing each other. Most competitors are former wrestlers or grapplers. There are rules and refs who enforce them. I hope my clients and prospects don’t think I’m some sort of junkie low-life. It’s better than Nascar!
Oh, all this talk about who we’d be if we we were dogs got me wondering what Gary would look like if he were human (by the way, Gary is our Doberman, and we just gave him a human name because it’s funny). So I decided I’d just google “Gary” and the first image I would come across of a human named Gary would be exactly what our little G would look like as a human.

Yep, that seems about right. Hi Gary!

Yep, I’d say thats a pretty accurate representation of Gary as a human. Thats funny. I think I’ll do the same for Toots! Also, I’m glad you made a confession. My confession is that I totally hate UFC, but the good news is, I don’t hate you!

p.s. German Shepards get hip problems early in life. You’re probably prone to hip problems yourself if you walk like a German Shepard. Better get a check-up!

You should start watching for an up and coming guy in UFC- Houston Alexander. He is a friend of ours and if you watched the UFC fight in London like a week ago, he knocked the guy out in less than a minute! Keep an eye on that guy!

I don’t mind UFC. Not my first choice but the few times I’ve seen it I got really into it. If you’re looking for a book to read, you have to get The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. It really made me appreciate boxing for more than just 2 people pounding each other - great story, great message.

That is totally Gary…happy and fun-loving…and sort of looks like his dad. And Jenny is totally a Golden. But for you Mark, I would add a Snauzer to the mix…they have big poofy eyebrows.

I think maybe that pastor didn’t do such a good job at keeping your attention with his message if you started thinking about UFC and what Jenny would look like as a dog.
