BBQ like a Mexican!
Has anyone ever seen Office Space? You know how Peter-man is sort of jealous of his construction-worker neighbor, Lawrence? That’s how I feel about Mexicans (should I refer to them as Mexican-Americans?) Sorry I don’t know the most PC way to refer to people. But sometimes I will be out near a park and I’ll see a big commotion, a smoking BBQ grill, tons of people, bags of chips everywhere, coolers, etc. And then I realize, “Hey, it’s a BBQ! Looks like fun!”. More often than not, it’s a big huge Mexican family.
I have to say, that’s the lifestyle I strive for. Funny considering you don’t need a ton of money or whatever. I guess what I admire about their BBQ’s is just the fact that it’s a huge family - everyone comes together for these BBQ’s and they do it ALL the time! I remember in college I had neighbors who were hispanic. Ah, I think that’s the PC term! Anyway, I would get annoyed because they’d be blasting the mexican music EVERY SUNDAY. Well I think really I was just jealous. Because they would all be out eating big old 20% fat, 80% lean hamburgers and drinking beer, and just having a great time. Sometimes I wish I had a big Mexican family.
My dad’s side of the family is Italian and when I was a kid I remember having similar gatherings, and we’d end up singing and my grandfather would be playing his mandolin, my dad - his guitar and my uncle on the drums and Nonnie would be singing. All Italian songs. I never took it for granted, those are some days I really miss.
Right now in my life I am striving for workflow automation, as you know. My dream is to feel laid back and cool like I did as a kid, and like these Mexicans seem to be at their fiestas. I know it’s possible!
Today I was flying out to AZ to do some work at my Scottsdale studio. I concluded that to jumpstart this new lifestyle, I want to buy 7 hawaiian shirts and some music with steel guitar and steel drums. I want to wear hawaiian shirts every day and listen to the music all the time. I think that would be awesome. I think it just might work!
So on a random note, Gary and I went for a jog in the mountains at 6 AM. It was awesome. But one our way home, I was bringing in an external hard drive and Gary yanked on the leash, tossing the hard drive out of my hands, into the air and crashing into the concrete. It was broken. I yelled at Gary, “BAD DOG!”. He gave me the same look that you see here. I know he felt bad and he’s really such a sensitive fella. I just can’t wait to get home and give him a big hug. I feel so bad for yelling at him, right before leaving for AZ!
Gary, if you are reading this, I’m so sorry for lashing out at you! You are a good dog! I know it was an accident, bro!
Anyway, back to the subject - if the weather is nice this coming weekend, BBQ LIKE A MEXICAN!
