How old are you… REALLY!
I just decided to take a little break from work to visit a web site I have been hearing about called www.realage.com. It’s like www.deathclock.com but not as intimidating. The idea is that it asks you a bunch of questions and then tells you if you are healthier than what’s expected of your age (you are younger), the same, or not as healthy (older).
I must admit I was a little nervous. As soon as it asked for my height (5′11″) and weight (186), I was suspicious that it was going to label me “obese” because the BMI chart, considers that heavy, but it doesn’t consider the weight of muscle. It assumes the extra lbs are fat.
But I answered all the questions as honestly as I could and here are my results:
Wow, that’s 10.7 years younger! (I’m 31.9)
Here were some notes it gave me:
PLUS: Low resting heart rate. Mine heart beats 58 times every minute
PLUS: Limited Red Meat Consumption (M-Sat, I eat mostly chicken and fish)
PLUS: I wear my seatbelt when I am in a car (thanks to Jenny! Before meeting her, I have been living in that 70’s “who cares” mentality)
NEGATIVE: I don’t know my blood pressure
NEGATIVE: Don’t floss enough (I’m working on flossing more)
NEGATIVE: Not enough folic acid in my diet, not enough fruits.
NEGATIVE: I am “not attractive”. But I don’t know what that has to do with anything!
Oh and I also got a NEGATIVE for not having a broad enough social network. I think that’s true, I am so freakin picky about who I spend time with. I have a handful of really really good friends and that’s about it. If people rub me the wrong way, even slightly, I want nothing to do with them. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, but I see the point they are trying to make.
On a related note, I set a new record on my Mt. Sanitas ascent this morning. My good friend Jonny-A came along. And Gary was there, too of course. Last Sat, I ran Green Mountain for the first time in years, which is also in Boulder. It took me 57 minutes to get to the summit, with a long, sketchy, ice-packed section that I had to step gingerly over on my way up and down. My personal record is 56 on the ascent, so I figured i could have beat it if the snow was gone.
More than that, I was just just loving the warm morning sun, the smells of pine, the sounds of a bubbling creek, and the views of Boulder/Denver. Awesome! I can’t wait to do it again.
Anyway, more running is in my future: trail running early Sat. AM and the Cherry Creek Sneak on Sun!
Speaking of the ’70s (see above)… anyone remember back when people could smoke cigarettes in airplanes? I remember as a little shaver, walking through a big cloud of second-hand smoke as I made my way back to the lavatory. I think that’s hilarious!

Who says you are not attractive? The computer cannot tell you that, can it? I’m sure Jenny would beat up the computer for that comment. And I think you have a pretty big social network. I’m sure there are many peeps out there reading this blog, and that is a social network. And prenatal vitamins are the way to go if you want more Folic Acid. Just do that.
