Happy Early Mother’s Day!
Since I’ll be leavin’ on a jet plane to Italy on Mother’s Day, and not returning for about a month, I decided that I wanted to give an early shout to my mom. She kind of looks like Celine Dion, but way less cheesy and much more bonita… or “linda”… which is her name! Linda! That was a confident move by my grandparents, giving her that name, which in Spanish is translated as “beautiful”. Luckily she did indeed turn out to be quite linda!
Looking back, I really appreciate my mom. I’m lucky that even though my parents were divorced, both my mom and dad were huge parts of my life. I lived with my mom, so I have much to say about her impact on my growing up. Here’s a summary of things about my mom that I really respect, admire, and other things I am thankful for:
TOUGH LOVE. My mom never gave me any easy options growing up, and I was never coddled:
* You want something? Buy it yourself? Don’t have the money? Find a way.
* Elbows off the table! Chew with your mouth closed! Don’t talk with your mouth full! Sit down and be quiet! (Have you ever been in a public place where someones unruly kids are just running around, screaming and causing a scene? It’s so annoying).
* After college, I asked my mom if I could come home for just a little while until I found a job. Her response was, “You will find a job” (in other words, “NOT A CHANCE”). I wasn’t too surprised of her response. That’s how she always had been!
* If ever I was inside on a sunny day, she would order me OUT. She HATED the Atari and Nintendo.
* In Junior High, she noticed I was starting to hang with the wrong crowd. She MADE me go out for a sport. “The good news is that you get to choose the sport, but you are going to go out for a sport”, I remember her saying. I chose Wresting.
…Then what do you know, I made some friends who also were on the track team. So I started track, too. Then I made a new friend on the track team who was on a cycling team, so next thing you know I am racing at the velodrome, and being conscious of my diet! That same friend was also on the Football team so I did that my senior year in High School.
Sports taught me what it means to work hard and commit to goals… and so going back to that moment when I was forced to choose a sport, I have to say in an instant, my mom had changed my life. Who knows what I’d be doing now if she wouldn’t have stepped in.
She gave me my first camera when I was 13. Canon AE-1. Three years later at 16, I started shooting weddings.
I said this in my last mother’s day post: I love how she says a prayer whenever she sees an ambulance.
When I was a little guy, she’d bring me a twinkie on days I was home sick. And if I ever had to go to the doctor, we’d always go to Coco’s!
Overall, I’ll be honest, she was TOUGH! But I appreciate her now so much for it and the tough love she gave me growing up is paying real dividends now, so thanks mom, and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY. I love you!

Oh my gosh! We have a pretty mom, don’t we? She has been using eye cream since she was 16 years old, that is how she stayed so hott! Mom never coddled you, she always coddled me. I love (still love) being the baby!
